  • Cover for Altitudes between 3,000m and 6,000m: You’ll need to add-on the Adventure Pack for hiking, trekking or tramping, peaking at altitudes between 3,000 metres up to 6,000 metres (not higher) but only where specialist climbing equipment is not required

Please note expeditions to or on the Kokoda Track/Trail are not automatically covered. You’ll need to add-on the Adventure Pack to your policy for an additional premium for hiking, trekking or tramping on Kokoda expeditions.

What Does Travel Insurance for Hiking, Trekking and Tramping Cover?

At Fast Cover, travel insurance for hiking, trekking and tramping is available to provide cover under a range of benefits to help you deal with and take steps to be prepared for many unexpected and unforeseen circumstances during your holiday.

This page provides only a summary of some of the benefits and options available for hiking, trekking and tramping at Fast Cover and does not replace the PDS which sets out the full terms and conditions of cover including benefit limits, sub-limits and exclusions that apply. Please note we can only provide cover for the circumstances and situations covered by your travel insurance policy and listed in your Certificate of Insurance so always review the PDS before deciding whether you need travel insurance and which policy is right for you.

Trip Cancellation Expenses

Cancelled adventures aren’t just disappointing, they can be expensive too. If you become unexpectedly sick or injured before your hiking, trekking or tramping holiday and need to cancel your trip, our Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit may help protect the non-refundable trip bookings you’ve already paid for including flights, accommodation and tours in circumstances explained in your policy.^

At Fast Cover, you can buy travel insurance for your holiday up to 12 months prior to your departure date, including before you've booked your hiking or trekking tour and any accommodation. Please note cancellation cover is only available with our Standard Saver, Comprehensive, Domestic Plus, Snow Sports Plus and Frequent Traveller Saver policies. ^

Travel Delay Expenses

Stuck at the airport instead of enjoying your hiking trail? If your pre-booked carrier including your aircraft is cancelled and rescheduled or delayed in situations covered under your policy, Fast Cover’s Travel Delay Expenses benefit is available to reimburse you for the reasonable cost of extra meals and accommodation. ^

Our Travel Delay Expenses benefit may be able to provide cover for the reimbursement of reasonable additional meals and accommodation expenses up to $200 for each traveller (excluding dependants) for each 24-hour period if your scheduled transport is delayed for at least 6 hours from the time your transport was scheduled to depart, due to circumstances outside your control. ^

Trip Disruptions Expenses

Natural disasters and severe weather could throw your trip off track, disrupting your hiking, trekking or tramping tour. If your scheduled or connecting transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted due to severe weather or a natural disaster that begun after we issued the Certificate of Insurance.

If a disruption to your trip occurs during your trip which is outside of your control and arises from the reasons covered by your policy and explained in the PDS, we may be able to help. ^

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Luggage

Travelling with your hiking gear and a phone or camera to capture that perfect summit selfie? Cover may be available for the loss, theft or accidental damage of your luggage and personal items including your backpack, sleeping bag, video recorder, and trekking poles in situations covered under your policy. ^

Limits and sub-limits apply to how much you can claim for each item. Conditions including situations in which we would provide cover apply. ^

Overseas Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Expenses

Hiking trails can be unpredictable, and medical emergencies can happen at any time. If you become seriously ill or get injured while hiking, trekking, or tramping overseas, having access to emergency medical care could make all the difference. Fast Cover may be able to help with the cost of getting you to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment or even flying you back to Australia, in circumstances covered under your policy. ^

Fast Cover’s international travel insurance policies are available to provide cover for your reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses, medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation if you must be transported to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment or be brought back to Australia with appropriate medical supervision. The medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation must first be approved by Fast Cover. ^

Overseas 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance

Even experienced hikers can encounter unexpected medical emergencies while hiking, trekking, or tramping. We’re here to help with Aussie based support when you need it most. Fast Cover’s Aussie based team of experts are available to provide 24/7 support for overseas medical emergencies wherever you are, depending on your situation and location, of course. ^

Fast Cover’s International travel insurance policies include access to our Australian based Emergency Assistance hotline with 24/7 support for unexpected medical emergencies overseas. Our Emergency Assistance team may be able to help arrange experienced medical support services in the event of unexpected circumstances during your hiking holiday. ^

Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses

Whether it’s a venomous bite in Indonesia, a broken bone in Nepal, or an emergency surgery in Europe, unexpected medical issues during your hike or trek could result in a sudden hospital visit overseas. Fast Cover may be able to help with overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses in some circumstances which are covered under your policy. ^

Fast Cover’s international travel insurance policies are available to provide protection against the financial burden of reasonable overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses from unexpected illness or injuries, such as those that may occur while hiking, trekking, or tramping.

Optional Extras for your Hiking Holiday

No two holidays are the same – and your cover shouldn’t be either. Hiking, trekking or tramping might only be part of your trip, so whether you plan to ride a motorcycle, rent a vehicle for a road trip, participate in snow sports or tick off your adventure bucket list, Fast Cover’s optional add-ons allow you to customise your travel insurance policy so you can include cover for a range of activities to fit you and other parts of your trip.

Cover for Adventure Activities

Got a big adventure planned during your hiking, trekking or tramping holiday? Fast Cover’s Adventure Pack covers an extra list of adrenaline-pumping activities to help you tick off your bucket list. ^

Remember, hiking, trekking or tramping, peaking at altitudes between 3,000 metres up to 6,000 metres (not higher) but only where specialist climbing equipment is not required is also an adventure activity. This means you’ll need to add on the Adventure Pack to ensure you have cover for this activity.

Examples of some activities that require the Adventure Pack include:

  • Abseiling
  • Outdoor rock climbing

  • Tandem parachuting and tandem skydiving
  • Sailing up to 15 nm from a land mass

Regardless of the level of high-altitude trekking that you’re covered for, you can only have cover if the trek doesn’t involve the use of specialist climbing equipment, even if you’ve taken out the Adventure Pack.

We provide cover for hiking in Australia! With our highest peak of 2228m being Mount Kosciuszko, you won’t need the Adventure Pack (unless you want to be covered for other adventure activities covered by the Adventure Pack like outdoor rock climbing). So, if you’re looking for travel insurance for trekking Mount Kosciuszko, hiking in Tasmania, the Blue Mountains, Snowy Mountains or any other hikes in Australia, our Domestic Plus policies can provide you with cover. Our domestic travel insurance for hiking in Australia does not provide medical or evacuation cover. If you’re injured or sick during your hike, you can use your Medicare or private health insurance.

Expeditions to or on the Kokoda Track/Trail are included as listed activities under the Adventure Pack. This means you’ can consider  purchasing the Adventure Pack add-on with your Fast Cover travel insurance policy for the activity to be considered under your cover.

Whether a claim for this activity is payable will depend on your policy type, the specific circumstances, the type of expenses you’re claiming, and the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

Hiking to Machu Picchu on the Inca Trail in Peru is undoubtedly one of the most popular hiking and trekking destination. The Inca Trail itself varies in altitude. For example, Machu Picchu peaks at approximately 2,430 m. Hiking, trekking or tramping at an altitude below 3,000 m without specialist equipment is covered under our list of Covered Sports and Leisure Activities. However, the Dead Woman’s Pass on the Inca Train peaks at approximately 4215 m.

Hiking, trekking or tramping at an altitude between 3,000 m and up to 6,000 m without specialist equipment requires you to add on the Adventure Pack to your international policy. The Adventure Pack is available at an additional premium as an optional cover for Aussie travellers aged 74 and under (at the date of policy issue) when they purchase a Comprehensive, Standard Saver, Snow Sports Plus, Domestic Plus or Frequent Traveller Saver policy. ^ It might be worth considering adding the Adventure Pack to ensure you have cover for higher altitudes in case your travel plans change.

If you plan on hiking Mont Blanc you’ll need to do your own research to know the altitudes at which you will be hiking as the Mont Blanc massif itself varies in altitude. Some trails can peak at an altitude of 2,665. Hiking, trekking or tramping at an altitude below 3,000 m without specialist equipment is covered under our list of Covered Sports and Leisure Activities. However, if you’re hiking to the highest peak of approximately 4,810 m, you’ll need to take out the Adventure Pack.

^ It might be worth adding the Adventure Pack to ensure you have cover for higher altitudes in case your travel plans change.

Mt. Kilimanjaro has an altitude of approximately 5,895m, make sure to add the Adventure Pack to your travel insurance policy if you’ll be hiking, trekking or tramping at an altitude between 3,000 m and up to 6,000 m without specialist equipment. ^ It might be worth adding the Adventure Pack to ensure you have cover for higher altitudes in case your travel plans change.

Basic (Medical Only) Travel Insurance

You can also apply to customise your policy and include cover under the luggage and personal effects benefit up to $2000. ^ Please note the Adventure Pack is not available with Basics policies.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Hiking, Trekking or Tramping?

Whether you plan on trekking to Everest Base Camp, Machu Pichu, tramping the Routeburn Track in NZ or taking on the Kokoda trail, we understand that unexpected situations and factors outside of your control could change your travel plans and leave you with out-of-pocket expenses. High altitude travel insurance can help better prepare you to deal with unexpected and unforeseen situations that could impact your hike or trek should the unexpected happen.

Here are some situations to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance for hiking, trekking or tramping and whether your travel insurance policy can provide cover for these situations on your next trip:

Non-Refundable Expenses from Cancelling Your Hiking Trip

Becoming unexpectedly sick or injured could force you to cancel your hiking or trekking trip. Rescheduling a cancelled holiday and dealing with lost deposits and non-refundable tours, flights and accommodation can become stressful and expensive. Consider if your hiking travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses.

Cancelling your Hiking Trip Due to Existing Medical Conditions

If you need to cancel your trekking holiday due to an existing medical condition, you could be left out-of-pocket for non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings. You may wish to check if your travel insurance for hiking and trekking can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to your existing medical condition.

Getting to your Trekking Tour on Time

If your scheduled transport to your trekking tour is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted, you could risk spending thousands of dollars on additional transport to make it to your special events on time. Worse yet, you could miss out on special events you’ve already booked and paid for. Consider if your travel insurance can provide cover for special event transport expenses.

Getting Sick or Injured During your Hike, Trek or Tramp

Consider if your international travel insurance for hiking can provide cover if you get sick or injured during your trek and incur overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses for sprains, cuts, hypothermia, dehydration and altitude sickness. Check if your travel insurance can provide emergency evacuation and repatriation if you become injured on your trekking tour.

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Hiking Gear and Equipment

Hiking gear and equipment can be expensive. Check if your hiking travel insurance can provide cover for your luggage and personal items and if there are options to increase coverage for specified high value items for an additional premium.

These are only some of the situations that you might wish to consider when deciding if you need hiking travel insurance.

Before you decide whether you need high altitude travel insurance for your hiking, trekking or tramping trip, you should read the PDS to check what our travel insurance will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice provided here is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

What is the Best Hiking Travel Insurance?

The best travel insurance for hiking can be considered as a policy that provides cover for the type of trip that you’re taking. When looking for the best hiking travel insurance, it’s important to choose a policy that aligns with your specific travel needs. This might include other activities you plan to do during trip, who you are travelling with and other considerations and situations that apply to you and your trip.

Here are some examples of things you may wish to consider when reviewing the best hiking travel insurance that may also help you compare hiking travel insurance policies to help you decide which policy is right for you:

Consider the Activities You Will Be Doing

Are you planning on hiking, trekking or tramping, at high altitudes?

At Fast Cover, hiking, trekking and tramping peaking at altitudes between 3,000 metres up to 6,000 metres (not higher) but only where specialist climbing equipment is not required is considered an adventure activity. To be covered, you'll need to add the Adventure Pack for an additional premium, available to travellers aged 74 and under. Before you go, make sure your travel insurance covers hiking, trekking or tramping at your planned altitude, and check for any age limits or other conditions that apply.

Consider How You Will Get Around Your Hiking Destination

Will you be renting a vehicle to explore between your trekking tours?

You may wish to check whether your travel insurance provides cover for the rental vehicle excess component of the rental vehicle insurance with your car hire company overseas in case your rental vehicle is in an accident, damaged or stolen during your trekking trip abroad.

Will you be riding or be a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter while overseas?

You may wish to check whether the policy provides cover for injuries resulting from those activities, and what conditions (such as licensing requirements or helmet use) may apply.

Consider Trip Cancellation Expenses

Have you booked your hiking or trekking tours, accommodation or flights?

You may wish to consider whether your travel insurance includes cancellation cover in case you can’t travel due to an unforeseen circumstance such as an unexpected illness or injury.

Consider Who You Will Be Travelling With on Your Hiking Trip

Are you planning a solo hike, a family day out on the school holidays or perhaps you’re embarking on a memorable trek with your best mate?

You may wish to check whether the travel insurance policy provides cover for singles, couples and families. Consider how the policy benefits and benefit limits apply to all travellers listed on the Certificate of Insurance.

These are just some of the considerations that you might wish to consider when reviewing the best hiking travel insurance, so you know what cover is available to you before and during your trip and under what conditions.

Before you decide on the best hiking travel insurance for your trip, you should read the PDS to check what the policy will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

Compare Hiking Travel Insurance Benefits

Depending on the level of cover you take out with your travel insurance policy, Fast Cover can provide you with different benefits to suit your travel plans, helping you to better prepare for and deal with unexpected medical and financial circumstances on your hiking, trekking or tramping trip. Compare our travel insurance policies and benefits below.

The table below is only a summary of benefits. Each level of cover is subject to full policy terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits, and exclusions as per our PDS available on our website. Benefit limits shown apply per person for both Singles and Duo policies. # These benefit limits are shared between Duo policy holders. ~ These benefit limits are shared between travellers under a Family policy. This means the benefit amount is for the whole family to be used together, not for each person separately. ^ Cover under these benefits are excluded while travelling within Australia. If you hold a Frequent Traveller Saver policy, the benefit limits apply to the combined total of all claims made by all covered travellers (including an accompanying spouse/partner and dependants) listed on the Certificate of Insurance.

What is Not Covered in our Hiking, Trekking and Tramping Travel Insurance?

It’s important to know not just what your travel insurance covers, but also what it doesn’t, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations and activities will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.

Below are some examples of when cover may not be available. Always check the PDS and TMD to understand the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits before making your decision to buy.

Hiking Over and Above the Altitude That You’re Covered For

We automatically cover you for hiking, trekking or tramping, peaking at altitudes below 3,000 metres, where specialist climbing equipment is not required. However, if you wish to go hiking, trekking or tramping, peaking at altitudes between 3,000 metres to 6,000 metres (not higher) but only where specialist climbing equipment is not required, you may consider our add-on Adventure Pack.

For example, if you plan on hiking up to 4,500m, and don’t take out the Adventure Pack, there’s no cover for any claims that may arise from you hiking between 3000m and 6,000m.

Professional Hiking, Trekking or Tramping

We can only provide cover if you’re hiking, trekking or tramping as an amateur. If you’re hiking, trekking or tramping professionally or in a competition, our travel insurance for hiking may not be the right one for you. You may wish to consider cover from a specialist trekking company to provide you with cover.

Hiking, Trekking or Tramping with Specialist Equipment

There’s no cover if you need to use specialist climbing equipment for hiking, trekking or tramping.

Rental Equipment

There’s no cover for any equipment that you rent for your hiking, trekking or tramping. Maybe you can check with your rental company if they’re able to provide cover for the rental equipment.

Mountaineering

Climbing mountains requires specialist climbing equipment, which isn’t something that we can provide cover for. You may wish to consider cover for this type of trip with a specialist company.

Disappointing Hiking or Trekking Tours

Perhaps the weather on your trekking tour was disappointing or the tour itinerary didn’t live up to your expectations. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your hiking or trekking holiday has shaped up, your travel insurance policy is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your time.

Domestic Medical and Evacuation Cover

If you’re hiking, trekking or tramping in Australia and become sick or injured during, you may be able to use your Medicare and private health insurance. There’s no medical or evacuation cover under our Domestic Plus policies.

If You Become Injured While Breaking the Law

If you become injured while breaking the law on your trip, there are various conditions and exclusions that may apply which means you may not be covered. For example, this may include trespassing, hiking without the appropriate permit if it is legally required, riding a motorcycle without the required helmet, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

If you are hiking overseas and need to be evacuated, you should contact our Emergency Assistance team on +61 2 8320 7999. The team will assess your situation and approve an emergency evacuation if it is necessary.

If your inability to return is not due to a medical or life-threatening condition, the Emergency Assistance team will still review the situation to decide whether evacuation is required. Cover for evacuation expenses will depend on the nature of the event, your policy type, and your specific circumstances.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

Fast Cover’s Domestic Plus policy does not include cover for medical expenses or emergency medical evacuation within Australia.

However, deciding not to go on a hike due to severe weather may not always be considered an insured event. You should carefully check the PDS to understand when cancellation cover applies and what is excluded.

When you compare travel insurance for trekking, you shouldn’t just look at the price of the trekking travel insurance, as the cover  offered may differ between insurance providers.

To find the best value travel insurance for your trekking holiday, you should also check:

  • The benefits that the trekking travel insurance policy can provide you
  • If you need to complete a medical screening for your existing medical conditions
  • What can’t be covered in your travel insurance for trekking, for example, what altitudes are covered by which policy or cover
  • If the travel insurance for trekking is able to cover you for the type of trekking and other activities that you’re planning on doing
  • If evacuation cover is provided when you do your trek overseas

Please always  read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully in detail before deciding whether you need travel insurance and which policy is right for you.

If you’re looking for the best travel insurance for trekking to Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, you may want to  consider if the travel insurance policy for trekking in Nepal will be able to cover you for the type of trek that you’ll be doing.

You may want to consider if your travel insurance for trekking in Nepal is able to provide cover for:

  • Medical cover should you become unexpectedly sick or injured while on your Nepal trek
  • Cancellation cover in case you’re not able to go on your Nepal hike due to sickness or injury
  • Cover for your trekking gear
  • 24/7 emergency medical assistance
  • Any add-on packs are needed for high altitude trekking or whether certain altitudes are covered at all

For overseas treks, if you have a serious medical or life-threatening emergency, Fast Cover’s trekking travel insurance cover includes the Overseas Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation benefit which is available to provide cover for your reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses, medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation if you must be transported to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment or be brought back to Australia with  appropriate medical supervision. Please keep in mind, if your trek is between 3,000 and 6,000 metres you will require the Adventure Pack which is not available with our Basics policies.

In these types of situations, you should contact the Emergency Assistance team to assist you, and they can organise your evacuation if it’s required. The medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation must first be approved by Fast Cover. ^

Helicopter rescue or evacuation is not covered if you’re hiking in Australia.

The policy does not specifically require you to have a guide for hiking above 3,000 metres in altitude (only where specialist climbing equipment is not required). However, it is a condition of cover that you take reasonable precautions to protect yourself during your trip.

This includes complying with local mountain regulations including but not limited to following any warnings or warning signs; and complying with the said regulations which may require a guide in certain areas or under specific conditions. Failing to follow such regulations or acting unreasonably may impact your eligibility for a claim.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

If your travel destination is situated at an altitude higher than 3,000 metres—even if you’re not participating in hiking or trekking activities—you’ll need to consider having the Adventure Pack add-on included with your policy for cover to apply.

Cover is available up to a maximum altitude of 6,000 metres and is not available under the Basics policy.

Whether a claim is payable will depend on your policy type, the specific circumstances, the type of expenses you’re claiming, and the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

There is NO cover for hiking over 6000m, even if you have taken out the Adventure Pack.

You are automatically covered to hike up to 3000m only. To be covered to hike up to 6000m, you will need to take out the Adventure pack and pay the additional premium.

Whether or not you are covered for your accident depends on the altitude where the accident occurred:

  • Accident occurred at an altitude over 6000m: If you have the Adventure Pack and the accident occurs at an altitude of over 6000m, this would not be covered as the accident occurred when you were at an altitude of over 6000m.
  • Accident occurred at an altitude under 6000m and over 3000m: If you have the Adventure Pack, you would have provision to claim. If you do not have the Adventure Pack, you would not have provision to claim.
  • Accident occurred at an altitude under 3000m: You would have provision to claim if you have an accident.

Cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS)
